Surströmming

Supposedly, US Customs has proscribed surströmming because they
consider it 'unfit for human consumption'. As a food importer told me
years ago, some cans of surströmming exploded in the customs holding
area, and they had a difficult time clearing out the odor. The 'unfit
for human consumption' appelation was applied to surströmming at that
time.

However, if you wish to make your own, I found some recipes.
