The beginning of the Swedish Christmas season is celebrated on December 13th by honoring St. Lucia, a 4th century martyr who is said to have helped many people in need. Although St. Lucia was Sicilian, the nordic countries venerate her. The tradition in Sweden is that St. Lucia, with her crown of candles, provides bread for the needy. The bread is a special saffron-flavored roll called "Lussekatter." The Lucia generally takes place in the home the first thing in the morning with Lucia bringing the rolls, and then there is singing by the family.
